Women's Health Week is encouraging Australian women to make their health a priority. Held in the first week of September, it includes both online and on-the-ground events dedicated to getting women together to start making positive changes.
According to Dr Helen Brown, Head of Translation, Education and Communications, Jean Hailes for Women's Health it is really important to consider ways to include more physical activity into our day.
"Physical activity such as cycling can improve your health, reduce the risk of developing chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes, some cancers and cardiovascular disease, and will improve your quality of life." said Dr Brown.
"Not only is being active good for your physical health, it's also good for your mental wellbeing."
Bicycle Network is a national health promotion charity founded on the belief that physical activity is vital for a happy, healthy life.
Anthea Hargreaves, General Manager Public Affairs, Bicycle Network believes Australians spend too much time sitting around and not enough time moving. In fact, two-thirds of us don't get enough physical activity.
"Riding a bike is a great way to have fun, stay fit and improve your health. By working with Jean Hailes for Women's Health we want to encourage more women to get active through bike riding. One of the best things we can do for our health is move and what better way than on your bike," Ms Hargreaves said.
"We are all busy and finding the time to exercise can be hard; so we need to find ways to make physical activity as part of our everyday lives. Be it bike riding, walking or taking the stairs, we hope that Women's Health Week will see women change their patterns and make more time to get active."
Bicycle Network will be arranging Women's Health Week bike rides in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart during September as well as promoting other Women's Health Week events.
